This vineyard where Flavio produces his Valpolicella Superiore DOC is found in the mid-hills of the Lessini range occupying an area of the floodplain of the Progno d’Illasi stream which is a tributary to the Adige river.
The Illasi valley is one of the largest which cuts through the Monti Lessini and starts in the Monte Carega group of hills at approx 1650m altitude. It then flows for 35km, 20 of which on floodplain which is approx. 0.5km wide. The vineyard is found on an abandoned creek bed which is typical of the vineyards of the area of Cellore d’Ilasi.
With regard to the coarseness of the deposits, the stretch in question is covered by the flash flood deposits of the Progno which are predominantly gravel and sand. These are by nature chalky and from the Dolomite hills with volcanic outcrops of compact basalt and tufa stone.
The vineyards of Campo Prognare are dominated by the white and pink colours of the chalk and red stones of the Cretaceous period. They are deep soils with high drainage and low water retention. Ideal for the cultivation of vines even by the Guyot training system. Analytical studies have revealed how the acid levels of the must are very good and this is mainly down to the presence of malic acid which is above average.
Also, the wines have intense aromatic notes with distinct spicy aromas. These soils are particularly suitable for growing Corvinone as here it manages to obtain optimal results both in terms of sugar levels and also in overall acidity.
